Incoming Freshman Academy

IFA 2008

What is the Incoming Freshman Academy?

The Incoming Freshman Academy is a program designed to prepare students for academic success in high school by providing them with accelerated supplemental instruction to possibly strengthen their skills in reading and mathematics. Students also reflect added benefit in team-building activities and social skill development.

How are students identified as initial qualifiers for the program?

All area eighth grade students participated in the ACT EXPLORE test to identify incoming freshman that might have difficulty meeting the standards of the high school curriculum. Scores on this test, reflect performance indicators at- or below- benchmark rating scales established by national test scores. Educational research clearly shows that students, who perform below grade level in reading and mathematics, also are more likely to struggle in science and social studies courses. High Schools located throughout the three-county region, would like to see all students be successful and have developed this Academy to better prepare students for a successful high school career.

How much does the Incoming Freshman Academy Cost to attend?

There is no cost to the students attending the Incoming Freshman Academy. All expenses, including transportation, are paid by the local school districts.

Does the student earn academic credit for the completion of the Incoming Freshman Academy?

Incoming Freshman Academy students receive a 1/2 elective credit to be used towards graduation requirements, if they successfully meet the criteria for this Academy. Please call the Henderson-Mercer-Warren Counties Regional Office of Education #27 for additional information.
